Funding opportunities

Select a scheme in the table below for more information on the current funding offered by the Association to support academic research in International Studies.

The association allocates over £80,000 per annum to support research by our members.


Closing Date




Early Career Small Research Grants

  • Current BISA member
  • Applicants must have a PhD
  • Applicants must be within 5 years of their PhD
  • Applicants must hold an academic post for the grant period
A Grant of upto £3000 to cover the cost of research expenses only Awards are tenable for 1-12 months

Postgraduate Conference Bursaries

  • Current BISA member
  • Applicants shall be undertaking a PhD in an International Studies subject area
  • Applicants shall have had a paper accepted onto the conference programme
The purpose of this grant is to support participation and attendance at the Annual conference Awards relate to current BISA conference participation

Founders Fund Awards

  • Current BISA member
  • Applicants shall be undertaking a PhD in an International Studies subject area
  • Applicants shall be undertaking their final write up of their thesis (within 6 months of expected submission date)
A Grant of upto £500 to contribute to personal living costs during final thesis write up period Awards are tenable for one year

Research Workshops in International Studies (RWIS)

  • Current BISA members
  • Applicants must be of postdoctoral standing
The research workshops are facilitated by BISA and upto £1000 in travel grants per workshop are available 

Awards relate to the workshop day organised by the Association only

Working Group support

  • Current BISA members
  • Working group organisers should have regard to the working group handbook when making funding applications
Funding of upto £4000 per group is available (currently there are 26 groups) Awards are tenable for one year

Postgraduate Network support

Ongoing annual support

  • Current BISA members
Funding of upto £5000 is awarded annually to the group Awards are tenable for one year.
